L'addio agli amici intimi e ai Wailers, Marley lo da il pomeriggio dell'ultimo show a Pittsburg. Raduna la band e, senza dire una parola, attacca il ritornello di "I got to keep on moving" da Rude Boy. Lo canta ininterrottamente per 45 minuti, fino a quando i vecchi compagni lasciano il palco in lacrime, a uno a uno. Morirà per un melanoma al piede che poi gli manderà in cancrena tutto il corpo. Avrebbe potuto salvarsi, se solo avesse voluto farsi amputare la gamba, ma, per rispettare la filosofia rasta contraria a ogni tipo di cura, si lasciò morire. Ora riposa da Rasta Cristiano (la moglie lo fece battezzare poco prima di morire) in un mausoleo nella sua amata Giamaica.
